Detox time

Told you I’d be back, just didn’t say how long! I had a pretty busy day at the dentist’s office. They gave me some sweet swag:

dentist swag

But it still doesn’t make up for the fact that I need fillings 🙂

So, about that detox 😉 The Crazy Sexy Diet detox is a vegan and green drink-based detox. I specifically chose it because it’s healthy, you’re not supposed to be starving and I love that it includes fasting, meditation, exercise and holistic tips like dry-brushing.

While I will NOT be getting enemas (TMI? But, really. No.), I do want to focus on the spirituality as well as diet portion. As a Christian, it’s pretty easy to tailor this to my lifestyle. Especially the fasting every Sunday. I did a Daniel fast maybe 2 years ago and really felt like I lost out on what the fast was about because I was so stressed about what I wasn’t supposed to be eating. A day I can handle.

I’m also going to come out and say this detox will be followed, um, loosely. I am the only person in the blogosphere that hates green juice. I don’t mind tossing some spinach or romaine in there, but 8 stalks of celery in my “green lemonade” makes me want to yak. I’ll work my way up to it, but expect a mixture of different juices. I’ll also avoid coffee and eschew dairy, but if a little gluten makes it’s way in here or there, I’m not going to stress about it. I have no gluten issues, so it won’t kill me anyway.

For exercise, expect a lot of yoga and TurboJam. I keeping it simple at home for the time being so I don’t have to worry about a workout schedule without my usual glut of protein. I’d rather just take it easy and honor my body.

I did spend the day looking through my cookbooks for some recipe ideas and will share those with you tomorrow.

Anybody fasted before? Or had a successful detox? Are you a green juice lover?

I’m back again!

Whew, I took a big break there, didn’t I? Our move to Wyoming has been…a lesson. I thought after we’d relocated, we’d just pick up where we left off in life in a new town. Boy, was I wrong! Our routine has been irrevocably altered and I’m struggling with getting into a new groove.

HOWEVER! I’ve made some lofty goals for this year and I’m determined to get back in action, new action 😉 I’ll share my progress with you, focusing on what Zucchini Bikini Martini has been about all along – eating healthy, working out and having a beverage or two.

Goals I’m starting on this month? Doing a healthy detox and practicing the entire Ashtanga Primary series. I’ll fill you in on more details later on today, but I’ve chosen The Crazy Sexy Diet detox for numerous reasons. If you have the book, have been thinking about doing a healthy cleanse and don’t know where to start or just got inspired, feel free to join me! I’m starting on Monday and I’m going to prep this week.

As for the Primary series, I LOVED my yoga practice in Hawaii. While it was expensive for me to go to my studio, I made time for it as much as possible because I loved it. Well, we don’t have a studio like that here. We DO have one called Wyoga (props for the cool name), but they don’t have Ashtanga classes listed. So, I’m practicing at home. If you’re new to yoga, I recommend getting your buns into a studio, because you should know how the poses feel and how to do them correctly, but if you can’t and can only watch videos, they do have a few great ones on YouTube. I’m using a book called Astanga Yoga & Meditation, which you may be able to get on Amazon or at your local library. It’s a great refresher and has helpful tips.

So, like I said, I’ll be back this afternoon with more info, but I’d really like for you guys to get involved!

Treat of the Week: Maple Stout Quickbread

Hi guys! Late post tonight…sorry about that 🙂 I was halfway through baking my treat when I opened my brand new sour cream and there was mold in it. I had to go all the way to the store to grab more!

Today was another day of vegging. I got to lay like vegetables with my guy and my pup and watch Pretty Woman. I promise, I actually do things, but you don’t want to hear about me doing dishes and cleaning my kitchen, do you? Boring.

Foodwise, we’ve been sticking tightly to our budget, utilizing leftovers and getting creative with all of the stuff jammed in our freezer:

Herbed Chicken with Feta Mint sauce, roasted asparagus and quinoa. When it comes to veggies, I think simple is the way to go. I LOVE roasted veggies and I get them in the oven while I’m cooking the meat and grains. I just set my oven to 425 degrees, prep the veggies and drizzle them with olive oil, kosher salt and pepper. Pop ’em in for about 10 minutes, mixing halfway through.

Our treat of the week was the Maple Stout Quickbread from the current Cooking Light magazine:

Love my drizzling technique? Ha! We can’t all be good at everything 🙂 It is phenomenal. Just really really tasty. It was easy to make and, although it sunk in the middle, the actual flavor wasn’t affected. We may have had 2 slices apiece 😉

We enjoyed ours with a hot cup of Zen green tea and an episode of Breaking Amish. Have you seen this? I’m sucked in. It’s pretty strange to see people tripping over things I take for granted every day, like a microwave. I never think about how many conveniences I have, but I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t nuke…everything.

What’s your favorite sweet treat for fall? I love anything pumpkin, but, after reading this month’s issue of Cooking Light, I’m enjoying the sweet quickbreads with fall flair, like maple and cranberry.

Have a wonderful night and see you tomorrow 🙂

Drugstore Steals and Duds…

Hey everybody! Hope you had a great day today. We enjoyed a nice relaxing Saturday, sticking to our budget with great leftover food  and a Redbox movie. We saw What to Expect When You’re Expecting. It was cute, sad and funny. And my man liked it too, so it was a double score.

Foodwise:

One of my favorite meal budget tips, at least for couples, is to always make recipes for 4. That way, you’ll have planned leftovers for the next day. Lunch was leftover pork loin, rice and roasted green beans with parm and red pepper flakes. Dinner was Mama Pea’s Pad Thai (covered in Sriracha) from her cookbook “Peas and Thank You”. I DEFINITELY recommend it. I’ve never made a recipe that she’s created that turned out bad. Ever. She has angel hands 🙂

I love designer products. I have Bvlgari’s Green Tea shower gel and love the way it smells. I also love Clinique products. Since dollars are tight and we have no malls here, I’ve been transitioning over to drugstore brands. Some are great and some…not so great. I’ll share products with you from time to time. Please understand that these companies do not know I exist and are not paying me 🙂

This is definitely a steal! Wyoming, compared to Hawaii, is very dry. If I don’t drink enough water or use a great moisturizer, my skin and lips get flaky. But I HATE having greaseball skin. This lotion sinks in quick and doesn’t have an offensive smell. I’m now addicted.

This product was a mistake, and rightly so! DUD! I love St. Ive’s Apricot Scrub, and I grabbed this thinking it was it. I only realized later that it was their cleanser. I decided to try it out anyway, since I love new products. This facial cleanser made me break out BIG time. I gave it chance after chance and it’s going in the trash. Back to Cetaphil for the winter 🙂

What drugstore skincare products do you swear by? I love Cetaphil, Purpose gentle cleanser for summertime and Dove soap for my body. I have oily skin and it makes me feel clean, but not all tight, dry and flaky.

I have such exciting stuff coming up in the workout department 🙂 Check back in next week to see what I have planned! Also, tomorrow, I’ll post our Weekly Treat. Have a great night!

Times are a-changin’…

Life is now a whirlwind! I worked so hard in Hawaii and achieved some semblance of sanity. I woke up at 5:00am, cooked breakfast, packed our meals and snacks, got ready for work and was out the door by 6:15am to make the (4 mile) drive to work. My snacks were timed every 3 hours throughout the day. I got home at 5:00pm, cooked dinner for us, did dishes, got changed into my gym clothes and hit the gym with my hubby. When we got back, I’d blend us some smoothies, do some laundry and take a shower. If I had a minute, I’d read a little or catch a show before heading to sleep. It was a fine-tuned machine that went CRAZY if disrupted. But…it worked 🙂

Now? Things are out of control. HA! That’s a mild description. I CANNOT sleep here. I also no longer work, so my day is not structured and I’m aimless. My husband works long hours and it’s hard to plan when he’s going to get off from work. I try to wait to have dinner with him, but I pick him up and he’s famished. When he asks for fast food, I’m tired and I know he’s hungry, so I just give in. I know, I know, what problems this girl has, right? I’m not ungrateful. I’m so beyond blessed…I just need to rein everything in! This control freak needs to get life back in order.

So, what can you expect now from the blog? Well, just read the title!! We’re getting back to food, workouts and drinks. HOWEVER, sleep is number one. I have to get back on track in order to start my day right. This will be the first goal I’m tackling. I like to start my day with my sweetie – cooking breakfast, drinking coffee, stress-free pre-work chats and lunch/snacks packed for him. I also like to do a devotion or watch a sermon from my old church before beginning my day.

Does anyone have any sleep tips for me? I’m game! I don’t want drugs, but I’m down for tips – hot baths, melatonin, no tv, whatever will work!

***I’m bringing in a few weekly features! Here’s a sneak peek at two of them 🙂

  • We’re going to celebrate Aloha Friday every week with a happy hour cocktail recipe and pupu recipe to go with. Pop in on Friday and join the party.
  • Weekly treats! I don’t want to feel deprived while I get my weight and healthy eating back and I’m never opposed to treats 🙂 I just like knowing what goes in them. So, in the beginning of the week, I’ll put together a tasty treat to nosh on throughout the week.

Have a great night!

Errand day…

Hey guys! I hope you are all having a really great weekend. Last night we went out to celebrate a friend’s birthday at the Cheesecake Factory (Ben and I always split an entrée and they’re so HUGE there. Also? LOVED the Well-Mannered Martini and the White Chocolate Blueberry cheesecake). No pics, because my friend was having a chat with us about some things and it just wasn’t the time. Afterwards, we hit up the Hale Koa (military hotel) to see my friend from high school’s parents…late night + 1 martini + 1 beer = 1 Shayna in need of hydration. Somebody else was feeling a little out of sorts this morning too:

I love that silly dog. We ran errands today. That’s all. Welcome to this whirlygig of fun 😉 At least I get to do it with my best friend! I drank this guy on the way to the bank:

And then afterwards, we hit up The Alley for lunch. This isn’t your standard bowling alley food. I picked up this thing (pardon the half-eaten bowl, I was STARVING):

Furikake-crusted ahi (tuna), Furikake-crusted salmon (both with a creamy Thai sauce), brown rice and mac/potato salad (plate lunch staple). It was phenomenal. We had to share this afterwards:

Again, half-eaten…chocolate cupcake filled with peanut butter with a whipped peanut butter frosting. It was so good, I can’t even tell you. I had to come home and take a nap, since I went on a bender (haha!) last night. Ben had to work, so he left after I woke up (and graced me with a pic on his drive to work):

I spent the night reading magazines and watching The Craigslist Killer (a little bit more my speed than the late night before). We’re going island-cruising tomorrow, so except some fun shots! Have a good night and we’ll see ya tomorrow!
