Times are a-changin’…

Life is now a whirlwind! I worked so hard in Hawaii and achieved some semblance of sanity. I woke up at 5:00am, cooked breakfast, packed our meals and snacks, got ready for work and was out the door by 6:15am to make the (4 mile) drive to work. My snacks were timed every 3 hours throughout the day. I got home at 5:00pm, cooked dinner for us, did dishes, got changed into my gym clothes and hit the gym with my hubby. When we got back, I’d blend us some smoothies, do some laundry and take a shower. If I had a minute, I’d read a little or catch a show before heading to sleep. It was a fine-tuned machine that went CRAZY if disrupted. But…it worked 🙂

Now? Things are out of control. HA! That’s a mild description. I CANNOT sleep here. I also no longer work, so my day is not structured and I’m aimless. My husband works long hours and it’s hard to plan when he’s going to get off from work. I try to wait to have dinner with him, but I pick him up and he’s famished. When he asks for fast food, I’m tired and I know he’s hungry, so I just give in. I know, I know, what problems this girl has, right? I’m not ungrateful. I’m so beyond blessed…I just need to rein everything in! This control freak needs to get life back in order.

So, what can you expect now from the blog? Well, just read the title!! We’re getting back to food, workouts and drinks. HOWEVER, sleep is number one. I have to get back on track in order to start my day right. This will be the first goal I’m tackling. I like to start my day with my sweetie – cooking breakfast, drinking coffee, stress-free pre-work chats and lunch/snacks packed for him. I also like to do a devotion or watch a sermon from my old church before beginning my day.

Does anyone have any sleep tips for me? I’m game! I don’t want drugs, but I’m down for tips – hot baths, melatonin, no tv, whatever will work!

***I’m bringing in a few weekly features! Here’s a sneak peek at two of them 🙂

  • We’re going to celebrate Aloha Friday every week with a happy hour cocktail recipe and pupu recipe to go with. Pop in on Friday and join the party.
  • Weekly treats! I don’t want to feel deprived while I get my weight and healthy eating back and I’m never opposed to treats 🙂 I just like knowing what goes in them. So, in the beginning of the week, I’ll put together a tasty treat to nosh on throughout the week.

Have a great night!

Back to the basics…

Hi everybody, I’m so excited to say that I’m back! But…this blog is gonna need a facelift. I’m no longer healthy in Hawaii. I’ve relocated to Wyoming! Use an excited voice when you read that, because we are so happy here.

I have a lot of fun stuff coming up for you guys and I missed sharing my adventures with you all. After a stressful move, I’m getting back into the swing of healthy eating and working out, I have a brand-new townhouse to decorate and tons of treats and beverages to catch up on 😉 So, hope to see you back!

Errand day…

Hey guys! I hope you are all having a really great weekend. Last night we went out to celebrate a friend’s birthday at the Cheesecake Factory (Ben and I always split an entrée and they’re so HUGE there. Also? LOVED the Well-Mannered Martini and the White Chocolate Blueberry cheesecake). No pics, because my friend was having a chat with us about some things and it just wasn’t the time. Afterwards, we hit up the Hale Koa (military hotel) to see my friend from high school’s parents…late night + 1 martini + 1 beer = 1 Shayna in need of hydration. Somebody else was feeling a little out of sorts this morning too:

I love that silly dog. We ran errands today. That’s all. Welcome to this whirlygig of fun 😉 At least I get to do it with my best friend! I drank this guy on the way to the bank:

And then afterwards, we hit up The Alley for lunch. This isn’t your standard bowling alley food. I picked up this thing (pardon the half-eaten bowl, I was STARVING):

Furikake-crusted ahi (tuna), Furikake-crusted salmon (both with a creamy Thai sauce), brown rice and mac/potato salad (plate lunch staple). It was phenomenal. We had to share this afterwards:

Again, half-eaten…chocolate cupcake filled with peanut butter with a whipped peanut butter frosting. It was so good, I can’t even tell you. I had to come home and take a nap, since I went on a bender (haha!) last night. Ben had to work, so he left after I woke up (and graced me with a pic on his drive to work):

I spent the night reading magazines and watching The Craigslist Killer (a little bit more my speed than the late night before). We’re going island-cruising tomorrow, so except some fun shots! Have a good night and we’ll see ya tomorrow!

Semi-annual happiness…

Hey guys! Miss me? 🙂 I’ve been spending some uneventful days over here, logging the miles for my races (I’m up to 3.1! It’s sounds like a little, but it’s a lot to me) and spending some quality time with the family. Actually, it’s both, since I run with the husband. Poor Ben has to put in 10:52 minute miles around the block every other morning listening to my running playlist (I control iTunes. I also have an affinity for Portuguese music and ridiculous 80’s songs):

If you click the picture, it gets bigger 🙂 Enjoy. I do have a fun post planned for you guys this weekend, so stay tuned! Today, I found the next book I want to read:

Aside from this guy’s tasty muscles, his story is crazy! He’s a NYC firefighter that got hit by a bus, required over 40 surgical procedures and 3 years later came back to run the NYC marathon. Wow. I need that kind of motivation in my life, stat! But I’m burning through “The Girl Who Played With Fire”. I also went to my little slice of heaven today:

Semi-annual sale!! I won’t share *those* details, but it’s nothing to get excited about, if you know what I mean. I was there strictly for business 😉 I also caught The Biggest Loser and for the love of all that is good in this world, can they PLEASE show me Brett Hoebel without his shirt?!? Please?!? Thanks, NBC, for holding out.

Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and share those gems with you. Have a good night, guys!

Party like it’s 2011…

Hey guys! I’m so sad to see the weekend go! Today was mellow. We hung out with the puppy until it was time for church. She always looks like we’re abandoning her:

What a sad face. And yes, she’s perched on top of the couch. So weird. I should be sorry about the crappy Blackberry pics lately, but I’m not 🙂 A lot of the reason that I took some time off was that in the midst of cooking, working out, going to work and loving on the fam, I felt like all the uploading and downloading and everything with the blog was becoming a production. I want to hang out with you guys, but I also want a life. The Crackberry is easier for me, so please bear with me. After church, we came home and devoured some lunch (tuna sammies and soup. More on my lack of food stuff in a later post). Ben needed a haircut and I needed my nasty runner-in-training feet scraped, filed, soaked and did up, so my love gave me some coffee:

And some cash and I drove myself over to the pedi place. Which is a feat unto itself because I don’t drive. I have a license, but we share a car and for the past (almost) four years, I kinda just get chauffeured around and now I can’t be bothered to drive. Now, when I get behind the wheel, I become this crazy road-raging maniac with no patience or common courtesy. At least my toes look cute:

They’re…simian. But hey, I like ’em and they take me where I need to go. The rest of the evening has been spent doing Yoga for Runners, cooking my behind off and watching The Expendables (why are action movies so dark? I can never see what’s going on…).

So, all around the blog world I’m seeing people’s aspirations for the next year. Last year, I started a new tradition of making a list and writing down things I wanted to pray about. I  looked over last year’s to see what was answered, what I saw in motion and what I wanted to reevaluate. It’s easy to see a year later what you wanted and perhaps why it wasn’t so good.

Here on the blog, of course I won’t share that list, but I can share some goals with you! I don’t make resolutions, per say. I feel like I try to catch bad habits and whatnot during the year and correct them at that point. But, I do have goals that I’d like to see happen in 2011:

  • Run my first half-marathon – ’nuff said. After kicking smoking, I’ve been surprised at how cathartic running is. I’m training for the cutest half-marathon and may be ready for a full one next year.
  • Mix up my fitness routine – Once I started going to the gym, I worked out of my Oxygen magazines. I like to lift weights, but I’m really shy in the gym and I feel like I wasn’t making progress because I was self-conscious. I’ve decided to switch it up with the running, more outdoors stuff, RevAbs and restarting The New Rules of Lifting for Women (at possibly a new gym. Although I saw the Rock while working out (and yes, he’s huge, so hot and totally dreamy, even while sweaty), I need an environment that is better for me.)
  • Read my Bible all the way through – my church is big on journaling and really getting into the Word every day and I’d like to do that.
  • Get involved with volunteering/ministry – Last year, I had a lot of opportunities to get involved with different causes and I never really dove in. I’m most interested in Habitat for Humanity and finding a small group within my church, either for women or couples or something. I don’t know, I’ll keep an eye out 😉
  • Care for the blog a little more – I’d like to get this little baby blog going. I have so many things that I want to do this year and I want to share it all with you! I want to do some giveaways, get to know you guys and post a little more regularly.

So, there you have it. Those are my goals for 2011. Feel free to help keep me accountable, will ya? Have a good night and see ya tomorrow 🙂

Last day of last year…

Hey guys! I was gonna grace you with a nifty post about my goals and aspirations for this upcoming year…and then saved that draft and decided to go with my last day of last year and a little of this year 🙂 I’ll regale you with my big ideas for 2011 tomorrow.

I knew yesterday was going to be good when I said “Breakfast?” and Ben said “Original Pancake House?”. I don’t know if it’s the sixties decor or just the bangin’ macadamia nut pancakes smothered in real(!) butter and coconut syrup, but I love that place. Like, really love it. I love being healthy and eating food that’s good fuel for my body, but I also sometimes like to eat things that just really make my mouth happy. Those mac nut pancakes make my taste buds do happy dances. I did have to temper all that carby goodness with a cruise around Diamondhead. The love of my life suggested a little walk and I had to take him up on it.

All along the sidewalk are trees and bushes with ornaments and lights. How cute is that Christmas hibiscus (rhymey…kinda).

We started up there, saw this thing:

Passed this awesome surfer dude:

Made it all the way down to here:

And walked all the way down, barefoot and hand-in-hand. I love my life 🙂 Not all the time, I assure you. But, days like yesterday? So great. We drove over and grabbed a fresh juice and drove up to the top of a nearby mountain to take in the sights:

And then hurried home to get changed and go to my favorite place to eat in the world ever of all time! I go to Haleiwa Joe’s mainly for babycakes, but the food there is great too 🙂 We started with cocktails (I’ve noticed the blog is sorely lacking in the “martini” portion of it’s name but I sorely lack “good judgement” when it comes to how many cocktails is too many, so take it where you can get it 😀 ):

That baby’s a Flat Island Iced Tea – coconut vodka, pineapple rum and island-y juices. Perfect, only complemented with some kimchi edamame:

It was not real kimchi edamame. It was more like “chili sauce edamame”. I know because I’m a kimchi aficionado. I love it regardless of the fact that it does not love me back. I rolled with a new (to me) entrée:

Furikake-crusted baked opa in a…???…delicious sauce (beurre blanc?) with kimchi-style veggies on top (spot on here) over a bed of rice. I wept with joy. Not really, but I almost did. It was that good. But not as good as:

This. Oh, baby. The waiter suggested we cover our babycake in hot fudge instead of raspberry sauce. Garcon? This was so good. Babycakes can help obtain world peace, I’m sure. It’s that good. It made me forget for one moment that I was going home to the land of illegal aerials:

Why must you shoot off aerials over our neighborhood? And make my dog crazy? And ruin my ability to watch a Criminal Minds marathon without subtitles? Yes, my dear sweet kind angelic husband took me home and let me watch hours of Criminal Minds. We smooched at midnight and called it a night. Ben-Shayna-Roberta Jean snugglefest ensued (in the editing read-through, I decided I should mention to those new to this blog that Roberta is my dog. Carry on.).

Today, we just took it easy -eating all the leftovers, running 2.5 miles, eating Puka Dog, watching Easy A (cute, better than I thought it was going to be, but maybe a little insulting? Christian does not = crazy 🙂 I promise), eating this:

which isn’t too bad, if you don’t mind nori and MSG. Now, if you’ll excuse moi, I’m off to continue reading The Great Fitness experiment (love this so far) and sleep off my run.

Two things of note: I’ve had the great pleasure of following a new (to me) healthy Hawaii blogger – go check out Candace’s blog! She makes me appreciate where I live thanks to fresh eyes and the ability to make cheap almond butter in a food processor (why oh why did I never think of this? I thought I was doomed due to the fact that I do not own a Vita-mix (sacrilege, I know!).

Also, has anyone seen the hot-mess-of-a-show Bridalplasty??? Which is exactly what the title expresses? This show pits a bunch of brides-to-be against each other, reality show-style, in order to earn plastic surgery procedures from their “wish lists”…?!? When a girls gets kicked off the show, the host says, “You’ll still have a wedding…it just won’t be perfect.” I have no words for how deeply deeply sorry I am for these girls. Or how deeply deeply sorry I am that I watch two straight hours of it. I’m feeling a little veklempt, discuss amongst yourselves.

Good night!

Great expectations…

Hey guys! Just popping in to let you guys know that I am signed up for my first *official* race ever! Kind of excited, I gotta tell you. I’ll be running the Great Aloha Run this year! While I’ve been here for coming up on four years, you’d think I’d have already done this, but for some reason, the race planners always have it on President’s Day and I never have off. I traded my MLK day with my co-worker to get President’s Day (cuz that’s how I roll up in this piece).

For those of you who know about Oahu (which I sure didn’t before I came. The pilot told us that you could see Diamondhead clearly on Oahu during the descent and I panicked because I thought I was moving to Hawaii and why the hell were we landing on Oahu. I am the dumbest smart person ever.), the Great Aloha Run spans from Aloha Tower (you can click the link to see it. It’s a lighthouse that says Aloha on it.) to Aloha Stadium (no sarcasm on this one; this is Hawaii’s football stadium where the Pineapple Bowl is played). It’s 8.5 miles and YOU GET A T-SHIRT for finishing! I’d mine coal for 30 years if it got me a t-shirt. Ask my husband, this is the complete truth.

So, I have to up my mileage slowly seeing as I need to run 8.5 miles and most mornings I can barely push out 3. At least I have that going for me 🙂 So, lots of training going on in 2011. On that note, I have to get to bed so I can get up for my run in the A.M. Good night and see you soon with some goals for the new year and how I keep my diet on track (expect during the month of December, where all I did was gorge myself with chocolates and gingerbread. No guilt, just honest reflection on that one).
